The Gulf Cooperation Council committee for certificates equivalency held its 13th periodical meeting on March 23, 2010 at Al Sharq Resort where issues related to equivalence of such certificates as diplomas; bachelors and doctorate degrees were discussed.

“The meeting which included all the members of the GCC equivalence certificates committees focused around issues relating to higher education’s certificate equivalency; special education procedures and standards and; common equivalency education certificate issued by private institutions and the private sector,” said Mr. Rabia Al-Kaabi, the undersecretary at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Chairman of the Committee.

The Committee discussed the equivalence of private education in all aspects but an agreement was reached to postpone this issue until the next committee meeting after further study and research. The meeting addressed the issue of distance learning with regard to the equivalence of the certificates for the students who graduate through this system; how to deal with poorly performing universities; exchanging educational system experiences among member states through visits; and visits to developed countries to share experiences.

A discussion was held on construction of a website for the committee where member states displayed the experience of excellence in education among the GCC countries. The next meeting will be held in Bahrain in 2012.
