The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has announced that the orientation and placement ACT COMPASS tests for enrollment to the Community College of Qatar (CCQ) will take place from June 21 to July 5, 2010. Testing will take place at the Foundation Program (Men and Women) Buildings at Qatar University. Applicants are required to present their Qatar ID and pay the test fee (QR 150) five days prior to the testing date. Application forms to qualify students for the tests are available on the SEC website www.english.education.gov.qa. Students can also apply for the tests during the annual Open House that will be held at the Four Seasons Hotel on June 14 & 15, 2010.

The tests will take place in two sessions from 8:00am to 12:00pm and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm every day except on June 29 where there is an afternoon session only and a morning only session on July 4, 2010. The exams will be in English and Math to ensure that students are placed in courses and programs in which they will be successful. Test results will be announced on July 7, 2010 onwards and notification of acceptance to the CCQ will be sent to students by the CCQ project Office.

“We are excited to welcome our first CCQ students in September. The dream of a community college education in Qatar is becoming a reality with this group of highly motivated young men and women,” stated Prof. Ibrahim Alnaimi, chairman of CCQ steering committee.

The Community College is the first college of its kind in Qatar. The CCQ will provide three internationally recognized Associate degrees in Arts (AA), in Science (AS), and in Applied Sciences (AAS) that allow holders either to join the labor market or to continue their university studies in one of the prestigious universities in Qatar and worldwide in order to obtain a bachelor’s degree.

The 2-year AA Degree coursework includes core Social Sciences, Communications and Humanities courses with support Sciences and Math courses consistent with university freshman and sophomore coursework for majors in the Arts, Communications and Humanities.

The 2-year AS Degree coursework includes core Sciences and Math courses with support courses in Communications, Social Sciences and Humanities consistent with university freshman and sophomore course for majors in the Sciences and Math.

The AAS Degree coursework will include core Sciences, Math, Humanities, Communications and Social Sciences with courses in Business and Information/Computer Sciences/Systems fields. The Degree is intended for graduates to enter work.

“CCQ graduates can transfer to a university to complete their Bachelor’s Diploma or go straight to work in a respected professional position. Students can also explore career and professional opportunities by taking classes in different fields at CCQ. CCQ will open doors of learning for student success" said Dr. Judith. Hansen, Dean of the CCQ.

The CCQ will also provide short-term Certificates and Training Courses, specialized training programs to meet the needs of a particular sector of the labor market and industry. Many students can study technical or trade programs to gain specialized skills before or after entering the workforce.

Among the advantages of attending a community college like CCQ are close proximity, open acceptance policies, small classes with high flexibility on subjects and timing. Many students also find that because of the smaller class size at the community college, it is easier to receive individualized assistance from faculty.

The CCQ plans to open to 300 new students in September 2010. It anticipates enrollment from students who need assistance with English and Math for University transfer; students who are working but would also like to go to college; students who need technical coursework for a job or a better job; and students with degrees who wish to update or diversify their knowledge.
