Qatar’s rapid economic growth demands highly skilled manpower in all fields and professions to sustain the country’s competitiveness in the global economy. To meet this need, the Supreme Education Council’s Higher Education Institute (HEI) provides scholarship opportunities to all Qatari youth seeking to pursue post-secondary education and eager to contribute to their nation’s development. Around 1,445 Qatari students are currently studying under six scholarship programs in universities based in Qatar and abroad. The most prestigious is The Emiri Scholarship Program designed for exceptional students with significant academic achievements and the potential to become national leaders. This program offers Qatari citizens the opportunity to study in selective universities. At the moment, there are 114 students in this program with 109 pursuing their studies at the Education City in Qatar. The National Scholarship Program is geared toward accomplished students with the potential to become future business and professional leaders in Qatar and currently supports 204 students, with 121 of them studying abroad. The Employee Scholarship Program allows young talented and aspiring employees in both public and private sectors to further their training and education while pursuing their careers in specific fields of study. The Diploma Scholarship Program offers support to students seeking technical and specialized diplomas. This popular program is currently limited to the College of the North Atlantic (CNA-Q). This year, applications outnumber the scholarships available. The Pre-College Grant Program (for English speaking universities) and The Pre-College Grant program (for non-English speaking universities) are granted to students in need of additional academic assistance prior to beginning their post-secondary studies. The Previous Scholarship Program is closed to new comers but the HEI continues to fully support students in the program and will do so until completion of their courses. Who is eligible? HEI provides scholarship opportunities to all Qatari citizens based on merit and special athletic, artistic or other abilities. Each program has its own eligibility criteria but most programs have a minimum requirement of 80% on the secondary school exit exams and 530 on the TOEFL scores.
