The Supreme Education Council in recent months has filled crucial positions in different departments and institutes. Here’s a look at some of the new faces:

Dr. Nawal Abdulla Al-Sheikh
was appointed Director of Communications in November 2006. She obtained her Master’s degree in School Administration and Supervision from King Saud University in Saudi Arabia in 1992 and her Ph.D in Fundamentals of Education from Cairo University, Egypt, in 1996. Dr. Al-Sheikh has held many senior positions, including Curriculum and Textbook researcher and director at the Ministry of Education, Globe Project Coordinator (country representative), and coordinator for the ‘Rashid Waste Recycling’ program, a project conducted in collaboration with UNESCO. Dr. Al-Sheikh has served on the board of directors of the Al-Noor Institute for the Visually Challenged, and as a MoE representative on the Human Rights Committee. Dr. Al-Sheikh has published various research works and publications, along with other authors.

Dr. Hamda Al-Sulaiti
was appointed to the position of Assistant Director of the Evaluation Institute in September 2006. She is an academic, educationalist and researcher. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Qatar University in 1988, obtaining a special diploma in curriculum and teaching methods, and her Master’s degree in Education in 1995. In 2001, she earned her Ph.D in Education from Ein Shams University in Egypt. Dr. Al-Sulaiti has held many positions in the educational field, in particular, at the Ministry of Education, including director of cultural relations, director of the educational planning and follow-up unit, as well as head of curriculum and teaching plans. Dr. Al-Sulaiti is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Arab Center for Educational Training for the Gulf States, and has served on the Education For All Committee, the Human Development Report Committee, and served as a supervisor at the Qatar Futuristic Program. She has written a number of books, educational documents, guides and manuals, including Arabic textbooks for Al Jazeera Academy.

Mr. Khalid Abdullah Al-Harqan
was appointed Assistant Director of the Education Institute in September 2006. Mr. Al-Harqan’s career in education spans nearly two decades. He graduated from the Faculty of Arts of Qatar University in 1986, and immediately afterward started his journey as an educator by taking on the Ministry of Education positions of supervisor of student activities and head of student affairs department. He rose to director of the MoE’s Examinations and Student Affairs Department, a post he held from 2000 to 2006. Mr. Al-Harqan has also headed and been a member of many committees during his career, such as the Continuous Evaluation Application Experiment Project for Grades 1-3, the Certificates Equalization committee (2002-2003), the Supreme Education Council (2002-2003) and the School Laboratories Development Committee, to mention a few.

Mr. Ismail Al-Mansouri
was appointed Director of the SEC’s Information Technology Department in 2006. Mr. Al-Mansouri graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Qatar University in 1996, but his career began even before his graduation when he was employed as a clerk in the Department of Examinations at the Ministry of Education. He worked his way up to become the head of the department in 1995. In 2000, Mr. Al-Mansouri was appointed assistant manager of the MoE’s Computer and Information Center and was later appointed director of the center from 2004-2006. In 2005, he was appointed general supervisor of the ICDL project. Mr. Al-Mansouri has participated in various projects, including supervising the design of the Independent Schools’ network, and setting up and equipping more than 120 computer laboratories as part of the integration of the computer science curriculum in schools and the national project of computer illiteracy in collaboration with the Planning Council.

Mr. Eissa Thani Al-Gaatal Al-Maadheed
was appointed Director of the SEC’s Research, Policy and Strategic Planning Department in 2006. He graduated with a BSc degree in Geography from Qatar University’s College of Education. Mr. Al-Maadheed has taught in elementary and preparatory schools, been editor-in-chief of an education magazine, and worked as office manager of the Minister of Education’s Office; he was an employee at the Qatar Post Authority from 1988 to 1994. He has attended numerous training courses and participated in various conferences including the 12th General Assembly Meeting of the Scientific and Technological Cooperation Committee in 2006, the 17th UNESCO General Meeting, the Strategic Forum around the Arab Countries 2020 held in Dubai and the ISESCO’s 9th General Conference held in Rabat, to mention a few.
