The Imperial College, Australian National, Cardiff and Pennsylvania State Universities are among sixty universities from the United Kingdom, United States of America, Australia and Qatar taking part in the first Qatar International College Fair which get underway today Tuesday, February 26 to February 28, 2008 at the Four Seasons Hotel. HE Sheikha Ahmad Al-Mahmoud, the Minister of Education and Secretary General of the Supreme Education Council will inaugurate the the fair which also hosts representatives from the international college entrance exams boards, the SAT, ACT, IBT TOEFL & IELTS at 6:00pm. “The Supreme Education Council is are working to bring the best possible education to Qatar’s young people, to build a strong foundation of knowledge in our primary and secondary schools as part of Education for a New Era, and we hope that many of our young people will continue their learning after they finish secondary school and pursue opportunities in further and higher education,” said HE Sheikha Al Mahmoud. “It is by studying at the best institutions and universities in Qatar and around the world, that a new generation of Qatari artists, business leaders, educators, lawyers, medical practitioners, and poets will learn and refine their skills and talents.”

Mr. Mohammed Saleh Al Mannai, the Acting Director of the Higher Education Institute (HEI) urged students Qatar to take advantage of the fair, which will provide a great deal of information on admission requirements, application process, tests required, visas and living in different countries.

The Penn State, Imperial College, Manchester and Australian National Universities are all on the Emiri scholarship list of the HEI. Penn State is ranked among top fifty global universities and it offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs of study.

The Australian National University (ANU), Australia’s only national university is placed among the world’s best. ANU has international links with universities in the USA, UK, Europe and Asia and as the only Australian member of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), ANU students and staff have numerous opportunities for collaboration and exchange. The IARU is an alliance of 10 of the world’s leading research universities. The University is involved in collaborative projects with organizations ranging from NASA to the European Union.

Imperial College London is a university of world-class scholarship, education and research in science, engineering and medicine, with particular regard to their application in industry, commerce and healthcare. Imperial is consistently rated among the United Kingdom’s top three universities, and was ranked 5th in the world by the Times Higher Education Supplement in 2007. The College has over 13,000 students from over 120 different countries. Imperial has three Faculties - Engineering, Natural Sciences, Medicine; the Tanaka Business School; and a Humanities Program.

Recently, on the occasion of the centenary anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Imperial College, the Senate of the Imperial University awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science to Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned in recognition of her leading role in the fields of education and community development, besides her pioneering role in the development projects at both local and international levels. The University of Manchester is the most popular university in the UK and is ranked among the world’s best. According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2007 published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University Manchester was ranked 5th in the UK, 9th in Europe and 48th in the world. Twenty-three Qatari students are currently enrolled at Manchester from among students from 165 countries.

The University has 23 schools, separated into four faculties: Engineering, Humanities, Life Sciences and Medical and Human sciences therefore offering the widest range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in the UK.

The University of Manchester has been awarded prestigious University of the Year awards in both 2005 and 2006. Manchester was ranked fourth in the UK for the quality of its graduates.

Out of the 268 students from the Middle East/Gulf region currently studying at Cardiff University, twenty-five students are from Qatar. Dermatology, Nursing, Business, Engineering and Medicine/Dentistry are all popular subjects with Qatari students.

Cardiff University is ranked in the top ten out of 106 UK institutions with the latest Times Higher World Ranking placing Cardiff in the top 100 universities.

Cardiff offers very high support to younger students who need to study the International Foundation Program - each student has two personal tutors (one from the English language teaching team and one from the academic subject teaching team). Cardiff also offers automatic progression from many of the foundation subjects (Business, Law, Engineering, Biosciences) without the need to apply through UCAS. For those subjects where application needs to be made via UCAS (e.g. Medicine and Dentistry) full support and counselling is offered - as well as lots of interview practice.

The UK’s Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) World University Rankings published in November 2007 placed the University of Sydney among the top forty universities in the world. It is a member of the prestigious Group of Eight key Australian teaching and research universities and it offers more than 400 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in 18 Faculties. More than 8,500 international students from more than 100 countries take their courses at the University of Sydney. Famous graduates include four prime ministers, three Nobel Prize winners, and a host of leaders in education, politics, business and the arts.
