More recently Advising and Career Development Center created new centers which offer students the opportunity to undertake a number of pre-entry tests such as the ACT, SAT® and iBT TOEFL® which are pre-requisites for many universities particularly in the USA. The principle underlying the Higher Education Institute’s entry into testing was to extend as far as possible advice and assistance to students where access to pre-entry programs was seen as part of the Institute’s services to Qatar. This is achieved by helping students understand university requirements, how to complete the applications and prepare a good application essay, how to write recommendation letters and much more. One of the most important steps of the application process is to know the different required pre-entry tests such as IBT TOEFL®, SAT®, ACT etc… and sit for them.
iBT TOEFL®
In cooperation with the Educational Testing Services (ETS) an IBT TOEFL® center has been established. The first test will take place on April 21, 2007. The IBT TOEFL® evaluates the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. Most U.S. universities as well as others require that international applicants take the TOEFL®. It includes multiple-choice questions testing listening, structure and grammar, and reading, as well as an essay section measuring writing skills. To Register on-line for the IBT TOEFL®, follow these steps:

SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II: Subject Tests):
It is recommended that students sit for SAT I or SAT II at the end of grade 11. The tests are administered six times a year according to set dates. Students can either sit for the SAT I or SAT II. They should know the registration deadline (which is usually at least one month before the test date).

ACT
An ACT center was opened to administer the test for students who are interested. ACT measures academic achievement in the areas of English, Math, reading and the sciences. Almost all American universities require that a student sit for either the SAT I or the ACT. The ACT is administered five times a year. The test is three hours and thirty minutes: English: 45 minutes, Mathematics: 60 minutes, Reading: 35 minutes, Science: 35 minutes. The 30-minute writing test is optional and is conducted twice yearly. For more information on ACT, visit: www.act.org To Register for the ACT test, follow these steps:

GRE® Graduate Record Examination (launching in September 2007): The GRE® General Test measures verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills that have been acquired over a long period of time and that are not related to any specific field of study. All students who are interested in pursuing their graduate studies in any field (except the Business field) should consider sitting for the GRE®.
